As a result of the generous donation from the class of 1964, the Benton Music Department purchased a set of classroom keyboards. This year, I used them with 7th grade students in general music class. For one month, students worked at their own pace through a packet that took them from a beginning to an intermediate level. This helped students understand better how to read rhythm, pitch, and dynamics, and gave them more of an overall understanding of how to read music. This unit gave students a chance to practice perseverance in a skill that didn’t come naturally to them. It was encouraging to watch the growth they made in learning something brand new!
