My Foundations of Science II class has tackled basic chemistry concepts for a good deal of the second quarter. We began with the structure of the atom and worked our way through Periodic table trends and chemical reactions. Our laboratories included investigating the reactivity of certain elements such as sodium, magnesium, calcium, copper, and aluminum. We end the unit with a batch of thermite. This demonstrated an example of a single-replacement chemical reaction in which we turn rust back into iron.
