In education, it is extremely important that educators provide students with opportunities to connect with content. In Human Biology, students have had multiple opportunities to do so. During our control and coordination unit, students were able to dissect a sheep brain and identify major structures that are also found within the human brain. For example, they were able to identify the spinal cord, cerebellum, and four lobes of the brain. Later, in our transport unit, students were able to learn their own blood type and dissect a sheep heart. In this dissection, students used pipe cleaners to follow the path that blood travels as it is pumped through each artery and chamber. This resembles the same path that blood flows within human hearts. Above you can see a picture of a student during the sheep heart dissection.
