Kindergarteners are working hard to learn to read. Students are focusing on words with the consonant-vowel-consonant spelling pattern, also known as CVC words. Knowing letters and sounds is only one step on the path to reading. It takes repeated practice putting sounds together and taking them apart to become automatic in decoding. Daily we practice as a whole group blending sounds with letters on the board, writing words, or reading books focused on these small words that kindergarteners can sound out. During reading centers small groups work with the teacher on direct, targeted instruction. We ensure students get a variety of experiences to strengthen their learning. While small groups are getting instruction, the rest of the class is engaging in independent practice with these skills.
