Nimtz

Mrs. Katie Nimtz teaches high school Special Education Math. This year the focus has been on paralleling the General Education Algebra class. Mrs. Nimtz has been working with an instructional coach all year to create grade and skill level appropriate material as well as engaging lessons for all of her students. With the help of an instructional coach, along with a great deal of collaboration between the Special Education Math class and the General Education class, students have received access to the same standards as their General Education Peers. Throughout the school year, Mrs. Nimtz’s students have built their skills in basic math facts, been introduced to algebra, and practiced using variables with one or more steps.

Currently, Mrs. Nimtz’s math students are working on graphing points on a coordinate plane, labeling points, and remembering which is the x-axis and the y-axis. Most recently Mrs. Nimtz’s class has been working on creating graphs to solve equations with two variables. To do this the students have been creating T-charts, which has also been a learning point for students as well, but they have persevered and continue to work hard each day.

The pictures show examples of students working on different projects regarding finding points. At this time some students were working on either plotting points to create a mystery shape, while others were working in a small teacher lead group where reteaching the use of T-charts was taking place along with additional practice.
