Bange Benton Community Speech Team

The Benton Community Speech team has been preparing for the past two months to start competing in January. Participating in Speech allows students to work on their acting and speaking skills in small group and individual settings. The IHSSA (Iowa High School Speech Association) provides a wide variety of categories in which students can participate. Speech has two seasons: large group speech (LG) and individual events speech (IE).  Students are currently working on a variety of pieces for Large Group competitions.

On Monday, January 17, Speech participants will travel to Williamsburg to participate in WAMAC LG Contest. Students have been working on a variety of categories including Short Film, Readers’ Theatre, One-Act Play, Radio Broadcasting, and Ensemble Acting. They will also compete in Large Group Districts on Saturday, January 22nd in Montezuma.

Students have the opportunity to grow in areas that interest them and explore multiple types of acting.  Junior Kindyl Andrew commented, “I like that we get to be in smaller groups because during the musical and plays it can be really chaotic. We have more choice and control over our roles and the pieces we perform in speech.” Joining speech is a great way for students to explore their interests in speaking and acting in a low-risk environment.
