Students in the Benton Community Middle School are provided multiple opportunities to free read throughout the day. Almost all of our 7th and 8th-grade students have a specific class on their schedule where free reading is the main priority. Many students in our building have already read over 2,000 pages this school year, which would not be possible without the designated time. Even with that time, some students benefit greatly from a more structured reading curriculum. The middle school provides this in the form of individualized reading intervention.

Individualized reading intervention is a time where targeted students get to work on specific skills that they are lacking. This time is designed to fit the student’s exact needs and to work on the reading concepts a student needs to be successful. Intervention at the middle school could include a book club with comprehension lessons, online enrichment activities, test-taking skills, and even phonemic awareness practice where we break down sounds and words. This opportunity has greatly benefited many Bobcat 7th and 8th graders!
