Our fifth graders have been busy learning about mixtures and solutions in science! Students explored different ways mixtures can be separated and learned how the properties of individual materials can help determine the best separation method. To put their learning into practice, students enjoyed a snack mixture experiment! As they worked, they discussed the different properties of each food item, including density, shape, and size, and considered how these properties could help us separate the mixture. Students also made connections to mixtures they encounter in everyday life and shared examples from their own experiences. Throughout the experiment, students had opportunities to discuss, apply, and practice science and engineering practices while working together and thinking like scientists and engineers.
