Kindergarten students are learning to take ownership of their learning through Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and self-assessment! UDL provides flexible ways for all students to participate and succeed. Using a colorful “Assess Yourself” chart, students reflect on their understanding by placing a sticky note under one of three categories: green for “I get it!”, yellow for “I’m not sure,” or red for “Help!” This simple, visual activity allows even our youngest learners to communicate how they feel about their progress.

Self-assessment helps students build independence, confidence, and awareness of their own learning. It also encourages them to recognize that needing help and practicing are important parts of growing as learners. Teachers use this valuable feedback to celebrate successes, provide additional support, and plan future instruction. Through UDL and self-reflection, kindergarten students are discovering that they can play an active role in their own learning!
