Seventh grade students started the year strong by learning about book genres and new books available within those genres. With the huge help from Lorie Kesl and Chris Frimml, each table in the library was stacked with books labeled with genres such as mystery, historical fiction, adventure, and more. Students rotated around to each table in order to view titles from that genre. At the end of the rotations, students selected a book for their Book Talk project.
Students were given three weeks to read the first fifty pages of their book. They created a Book Talk product such as a brochure, flyer, or playing card that displayed the various details of their book. On September 17th and 18th, students participated in a Book Buffet where they shared their Book Talk products and enjoyed cake from Main Street Bakery in Keystone. Students were able to practice their communication skills while respecting their peers when engaging in the Book Talk conversations. They proved reading can be a piece of cake.
