At Benton Community Middle School our school schedule is designed around an even and odd day rotation, providing students and teachers with a consistent yet balanced learning experience. This schedule allows students to focus on a manageable number of classes each day while giving teachers meaningful opportunities to connect with students. The alternating schedule also creates a rhythm that supports organization, preparation, and deeper learning. By having students regularly throughout the school year, teachers can better understand their students’ strengths, needs, interests, and individual learning styles.
One of the greatest benefits of having students with us all year long, rather than dividing the year into separate semesters, is the opportunity to build strong, positive relationships. Relationships take time, and seeing students consistently throughout the year allows staff to move beyond simply knowing a student’s name or academic performance. We have more opportunities to celebrate successes, provide encouragement, recognize challenges, and help students grow. These ongoing connections create a stronger sense of belonging and help students know that the adults in their school genuinely care about them and their success.
Serving students throughout the entire year also strengthens our ability to serve the district as a whole. When educators have the opportunity to know and support students over an extended period of time, they develop a deeper understanding of the student community and can better identify ways to meet individual and collective needs. Rather than relationships ending when a semester concludes, they continue to grow and develop. Ultimately, our even and odd day schedule, combined with having students all year long, allows us to build a school culture centered on connection, consistency, and positive relationships creating an environment where every student has the opportunity to be known, supported, and successful.
