On April 23rd, in celebration of Arbor Day, students in Mrs. Cherveny’s 2nd grade class partnered with the Benton County Conservation naturalists to assist with a tree planting project along the Atkins Roundhouse Trail that was impacted by the Derecho. During the project, students learned about the importance of trees and how they help our environment by providing clean air, shelter for wildlife, and beauty to our community. Students also learned about plant needs, proper tree planting techniques, and how to care for young trees as they grow. In addition, students explored a variety of native Iowa tree species and gained a deeper appreciation for conservation and protecting natural resources.
This hands-on learning experience allowed students to connect classroom learning to the real world while giving back to their community. Students were excited to play a role in restoring the trail and helping create a greener future for generations to come.
