Every year on March 21, is a day dedicated to celebrating people with down syndrome. “Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused when an unusual cell division results in an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21. This extra genetic material causes the developmental changes and physical features of Down syndrome.” (Mayo Clinic, 2024). Every student is unique and everyone has their own strengths. It is important to start inclusion at an early age for kids to start recognizing differences in strengths and abilities to learn how to work together and be successful by using each other's strengths and abilities.
So far, at Atkins Elementary, we have had a few students with Down syndrome who have had inclusive classroom experiences and all of the students respond really well. They spend time together, learn about each other's strengths and how they can use these strengths to help each other. Our students with Down syndrome teach students how to be kind, have fun, and follow classroom routines. Students without Down syndrome learn how to communicate, be patient and be flexible with adapting to activities in a new way. The overall impact has been great to watch. All of the students have found common interests and just adore spending time with each other and helping everyone out in this inclusive environment.
Why do we celebrate on March 21st? “21st March (21/3) matches the 3 copies of chromosome 21. This is unique to people with Down syndrome (worlddownsyndromeday.org 2026). You can celebrate by sharing with others about diversity and inclusion. You can also celebrate by wearing blue and gold and by rocking your favorite socks. When you put socks together they can resemble chromosomes. The last thing you can do is be kind to others. Try to understand that everyone is different and has their own strengths. So, be proud of your own and others around you in your community.
