This month Kindergarten students published their own stories! The students are excited to be authors and have been building skills to apply to the writing process. The first story published is called "Ways Kids Get to School."
Benchmark Advance teaches the writing process by focusing on "writing to sources", where the students respond in ways to read-alouds or texts by telling, drawing, and writing. The students have been exposed to guided practice and modeling to build skills from letters to simple sentences. The students are currently transitioning to pre-planning using webs, drafting their writing, and publishing using peer review and teacher feedback!
The students are very proud of their hard work and take pride and ownership in their published stories. The students especially enjoy being able to share their stories with peers and families. Keep up the great work Kindergarten authors!!
