During the month of December, our AK friends enjoyed a festive gingerbread unit. Students listened to a variety of gingerbread stories, then practiced their literacy skills by comparing and contrasting the characters, events, and settings. This learning ties directly to our AK priority standard: “With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story.”

Students also showed off their creativity, as they designed and constructed their own gingerbread houses. After sketching their plans, students used yummy treats to bring their designs to life. We read a story called “The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School,” by Laura Murray and baked gingerbread cookies. To our surprise, the little gingerbread cookies ran off–just like the story! The students searched all around the school, finding clues that helped them find their gingerbread cookies. These learning experiences added incredible excitement and adventure to our gingerbread unit!
