As a new school year begins, students and teachers alike embark on a fresh academic journey filled with goals, challenges, and opportunities. One of the most important steps in setting the stage for success is beginning-of-the-year testing, often referred to as diagnostic or baseline assessments. These assessments are not about assigning grades but about gathering valuable information to guide instruction and support student growth. Beginning-of-the-year testing provides teachers with a clear picture of where each student is starting academically and the results are able to be used to track growth and progress as they take those same tests later in the year.
All 7th and 8th grade students spent last week taking three different assessments: aReading, aMath, and STAR Reader. These tests are tests they will end up taking three times this school year. The data will be collected by teachers, shared with students, and instruction will be made accordingly. Our goal is that students are taking these tests seriously and giving their best effort so that we can see growth throughout the year. By starting the year with a clear understanding of where students are academically, educators can ensure that every child is given the opportunity to grow, achieve, and thrive throughout the school year with a quality education for a lifetime of learning.
