The first day of school at Atkins Elementary started with a tradition that brings the whole community together. Just like at the other elementaries in the district, students and staff gathered outside for a special flag-raising ceremony. Tom Lange, a local Marine veteran with strong family ties to the school through both staff and students, proudly raised the flag as the national anthem played. Afterwards, the students recited the Pledge of Allegiance, marking the start of a brand-new school year.

Benton Community’s motto is “A Place to Belong,” and traditions like this help make that saying true. The flag-raising is more than just a ceremony—it’s a reminder of the pride, respect, and togetherness that Benton schools value. For many students, it’s a memorable way to begin the year, standing side by side with friends, teachers, and neighbors in a moment that connects the whole community.
