Since 2008, the State of Iowa has required students entering kindergarten to show proof that they have had a dental screening by submitting a Certificate of Dental Screening to their school. Having good oral health promotes better learning for children at school. Dental screenings for children also provide an opportunity for education on how to care for their teeth and gums through proper brushing, flossing, and making healthy food and drink choices.
For students entering kindergarten, a dental screening can be performed by a licensed dentist, dental hygienist, doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or nurse. A screening for kindergarten is valid from after the age of three until four months after enrollment. The Certificate of Dental screening is the only form that will be accepted by the school to show proof of a dental screening.
If you have a child entering kindergarten who has not had a dental screening, please schedule an appointment, and have the provider fill out the Certificate of Dental Screening. If your child has had a dental screening since turning three years old, please have the provider who completed the screening fill out the Certificate of Dental Screening and turn it in to your child’s school.
