5th grade students made worm habitats with red worms to learn about the job of decomposers in an ecosystem. Students brought in coffee grounds, eggshells, apple cores, carrots and celery for the worms to feed on. When they made the habitats students also collected dried leaves and twigs to combine with the food scraps. Dirt was also added to the mix. After observing the worms, students were able to take apart the habitats and see how decomposition works. The opportunity to see firsthand a living habitat and how it works is an invaluable experience.
