In 1991, Iowa became the first state in the nation to offer wheelchair events to middle and high school students, paving the way for greater inclusion in athletics. This progressive step recognized the importance of ensuring that every student, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to participate, compete, and shine. The inclusion of wheelchair events in track and field empowers student-athletes by promoting equity, confidence, and community support. This year, Benton Community proudly celebrates a historic milestone: Elizabeth, a 7th grader, is the school’s first wheelchair athlete. Her participation not only showcases her strength and determination, but also inspires others and reminds us of the importance of making space for all kids to be seen, supported, and celebrated in sports.
