The year is off to a great and busy start in the vocal music department! There are many ways to get involved in choir at Benton Community: choir, show choir, honor choirs, musical, madrigal, solo and ensemble state contest, and more.

Many activities listed above are already well on their way as we begin the school year. All of the choirs, 7-12, are preparing for their first concert on Monday, October 23rd. The middle school students perform at 6:30, followed by the high school at 7:30. The Saturday prior to this concert, some high school students will audition for the Iowa All State Chorus. They have been preparing for this since early August. If selected, they will participate in the All State Music Festival on the Iowa State campus in November, along with any students selected for the OPUS honor choirs. Audition recordings for the OPUS honor choir are sent in for grades 5-9, and selected via blind virtual screening.

All the show choirs have about half of the choreography in their show learned, and practices are going very well. We look forward to hosting our show choir competition, A Touch of Class, with great pride, again on February 10th, 2024.

This year’s musical, Once Upon a Mattress, is well underway and will be presented on November 3rd, 4th, and 5th. This is directed by Ms. Knaack and Mrs. Schmuecker. Contact Amy Eggert in the main office for tickets at aeggert@benton.k12.ia.us or call 319-228-8701 X1357.

We hope to see you at one of our many events throughout the year!
