“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” This quote from Arthur Ashe is a powerful reminder that progress doesn’t require perfect conditions. It guides us to start by using the tools, ability, and opportunities that we already have. Each day students are faced with new challenges to tackle in the classroom. No two students begin or end the school year in the same place. What matters most is that they feel comfortable to take the first step and keep trying, even when the challenges feel difficult.
Every day in our second grade classroom, we talk about the importance of giving your absolute best effort and how that looks different for each student. When we focus on effort rather than excellence, we are building both confidence and resilience. It is my hope that students leave my classroom each year knowing that learning isn’t doing everything one hundred percent correct, rather learning is being willing to try, make mistakes, and continue to grow along their journey.
