Recently in 5th grade we learned about the structure of a corn plant. We looked at how we decide which resources we should develop? Students learned about how and where corn originated, how and where corn is grown, and what corn can be used for. We learned about crop rotation. This originated with Native Americans in what they called the “Three Sisters” method where they planted corn, beans, and squash together.
We had the opportunity to visit a local farm and expand our knowledge on corn. There we were able to see crop rotation in use and learn about different hybrid seeds. This was a great learning opportunity for 5th grade to deepen our understanding of the corn plant.
