Problem-solving, collaboration, and cooperative learning are universal skills in the work world. In the 7th grade math classroom, the main goals of working with classmates are to improve each student’s mathematical problem-solving skills while also increasing their confidence in their math abilities.  This type of approach also helps the 7th grade students with their peer interactions and communication skills.

During the second quarter, the 7th graders have more opportunities to “work together” to “learn together.”  As math becomes more challenging, students have the chance to discuss how to approach a problem with their peers.  It is amazing to listen to the students explain their thinking, challenge their classmates' thinking, and teach each other when there is confusion. As I walk around, I can clarify any misunderstandings, challenge the group's thought processes, and check for individual student understanding.  When we share out as a whole class, it’s evident that students feel more confident to share and explain their answers because they have already had the discussion with their group members.
