At Benton, seniors have the opportunity to take classes for dual-enrollment credit through Kirkwood Community College. That means that they receive credits for high school graduation and for college degrees. Over 75 seniors are currently enrolled in the English class, Composition I, where they write using four different aspects of writing. This class, along with Composition II and Fundamentals of Oral Communication, allow seniors to get a head start on their college education. Currently, there are at least three full-time Benton English teachers (with their master’s degree) that can teach some of these classes.

First, these classes teach seniors how to better manage their time. With schedules that mimic college classes, this pressures students to manage their own personal time. That means they are responsible for strict due dates. Of course, this reflects the real world, where deadlines are expected for just about any job.

Second, these classes lessen the financial burden these students might have in the future. Currently, Composition I and II combined will cost anywhere from $1,200 to $2,400 for in-state tuition. With many colleges requiring both, this is a cost that our seniors will not have to worry about. Additionally, this does not include the cost for the textbook, which is always surprisingly expensive.

Finally, taking dual-enrollment classes in high school allows students to grow and become better prepared for any future classes. No matter the class, writing shows up across the disciplines. These classes will be a starting point for the rest of their collegiate careers.
