At Benton Community, our music department is a busy and vibrant hub for creativity, collaboration, and personal expression. Amidst the fast pace and pressures of today’s world, Band and choir offers students a meaningful space to connect—with music, with one another, and with themselves. Through rehearsals, performances, and ensemble work, Benton students are challenged to grow not only as musicians but as confident, expressive individuals. The structured yet supportive environment fosters significant personal growth, allowing students to find their voice while learning to listen, adapt, and contribute to a unified sound.
With all the requirements for graduation, how does music improve, enhance, and partner with core classes like Language Arts, Math, and Science? Music is one of the most powerful tools in a student's education. Music has a dynamic impact on the brain, making it an important tool for enhancing learning. When students engage in music—playing an instrument or singing—it activates multiple areas of the brain at once, including those responsible for memory, language, attention, and emotion. This whole-brain engagement strengthens neural connections, helping students process and retain information more effectively. Studies in neuroscience show that musical training can improve skills such as pattern recognition, listening, and problem-solving. Additionally, music releases dopamine, which boosts motivation and focus, creating a more positive learning environment. As a result, incorporating music into education not only deepens understanding but also supports overall cognitive development and academic success.
The Benton Community Music Department offers students numerous opportunities to participate, grow, and excel in music through a wide variety of ensembles and events. Students can be involved in groups such as Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, Madrigal Choir, and Show Choir, each providing unique performance experiences and skill development. In addition to daily classroom ensembles, students are encouraged to challenge themselves through opportunities like All-State auditions, Honor Choirs, Honor Bands, Jazz Band contests, Solo/Ensemble Contest, and the State Large Group Contest. These experiences allow students to refine their musical abilities, build confidence, and collaborate with peers who share a passion for music. Together, these offerings create a well-rounded program that supports both individual growth and ensemble excellence.
Our music curriculum goes far beyond learning notes and rhythms. Students develop critical skills such as discipline, teamwork, emotional awareness, and communication—skills that extend well beyond the stage. Whether preparing for concerts, participating in festivals, or performing solos, students engage in real-world artistic experiences that build confidence and resilience. This hands-on approach empowers students to take ownership of their craft and recognize the impact of their contributions within a group setting.
Music at Benton is so much more than an elective—it is an essential investment in our community’s future. Our program cultivates not only musicians, but also empathetic leaders, creative thinkers, and dedicated collaborators. Through music, students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them, becoming thoughtful individuals who carry the power of expression and connection into every aspect of their lives.
