As part of the Farm Bureau’s “Ag in the Classroom” through the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation, Taylor visited the kindergartners at Atkins to teach students how the ingredients in one of their favorite foods—pizza—come from agriculture. Taylor read a story to show how each part of a pizza starts on a farm: Wheat is grown and harvested to make flour for the pizza crust.
Tomatoes are planted, picked, and turned into pizza sauce. Dairy cows produce the milk that becomes mozzarella cheese. Pigs are raised for the pepperoni. Vegetables like peppers and mushrooms are grown in fields or greenhouses.

The children then got to color a plate and the different ingredients to create their own pizza. They also received a pizza review paper to match the ingredients up to what it looks like on the farm to share with their families, continuing the learning beyond the classroom. Taylor will continue to visit the kindergartners every month to teach them about agriculture and how it plays a role in our everyday lives!
