The Atkins Elementary school doors opened again this past August to many returning children and many new faces. Thirty of those faces were students who are only three years old and were beginning their first experiences with structured learning. There were many happy tears, excited tears, and terrified tears. (Along with many smiling faces and sounds of excitement!) For many of these children, it was the first time of being away from their trusted guardian.
Three-year-old preschool introduces children to sharing, listening, and cooperating with others. Teachers gently guide them through learning experiences that build curiosity, language, and motor skills. While some students, and parents, may take time to warm up, the consistent and supportive environment helps them gain confidence and feel secure, usually in about two weeks.
Parents often play an important role during this transition, helping to ease separation anxiety by establishing routines, and staying positive about the new experience. Thank you parents for sticking with this uncomfortable time. With time, our next class of Bobcats are off and running!
