Benton Community has the best PTO! They sponsored the Atkins kindergartners so we could go on a field trip to Dan and Debbie’s Creamery. The kindergartners learned how Dan and Debbie take care of their holstein cows and how the cows are milked. On the day we went, we were able to see them producing and packaging mint chocolate chip ice cream.
During the second part of the tour, we watched a video of their farm. We were able to see the machines that feed the cows as well as the milking machines. We learned that the cows wear collars and as they come in to get milked, a computer reads the collar to identify the cow. The computer can tell how much milk the cow has produced that day and in its lifetime.
The best part of the tour? Eating ice cream of course!
