Benton Community High School

Our high school/middle school facility is located in Van Horne, Iowa.  During the 1997-98 school year, the Benton Community School District implemented an intensive 4x4 Block Schedule in grades 9-12. The Class of 2001 will be the first class to have utilized the block during all four years of high school. The academic day consists of 4 primary academic blocks. The middle of the day consists of a seminar period, and/or vocal music classes or lunch.

As a result of the transition to the block scheduling, we believe students have a richer academic experience at Benton. Students are able to concentrate on fewer subjects at one time, and are provided with a variety of learning experiences. They are also better able to develop positive relationships with the faculty. We believe that the students are receiving a more valuable educational experience in all curricular areas with focus on student learning instead of curriculum coverage.

The teachers are dedicated to staff and curriculum development designed to enhance the block schedule. Some indicators used to measure the success of the block show promise. Honor roll numbers are up, average daily attendance is up, and the number of students with failing grades is down. The pace of the academic day is improved for students and teachers alike.
