The Benton Community
Board of Education will conduct the regular monthly
meeting on Wednesday, January 18th at the MS/HS
Media Center starting at 7:00 p.m. As part of
the regular agenda, the Board will be considering a
recommendation from the elementary sectioning
committee. There will be an opportunity for public
comment as part of this agenda item during the
meeting.
The committee recommendation to the Board includes
the following components:
1. Reduce one section of 4th grade at the Atkins
Center for the 2012-13 school year. This results in
six sections of 4th grade across the District next
school year.
2. Reduce one section of Kindergarten, 1st
Grade, and 2nd Grade at the Norway Center for the
2012-13 school year. This results in five sections
of Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade across the
District next school year.
3. K-2 students from the community of Blairstown
and the area to the west of Blairstown transition
from the Norway Center to the VH Center in order to
reduce the three sections at the K, 1st, and 2nd
grade levels.
4. Students transitioning to the VH Center would
also attend the Keystone Center in grades 3-6 in
subsequent years.
5. This recommendation begins a phased
transition from a six section to a five section
delivery system at the elementary level across the
District by the 2015-16 school year unless
enrollments increase at grade levels.
The committee considered enrollment data for the
District, student demographic information, and
financial implications due to enrollment decline in
formulating this recommendation for consideration.
The committee decided that any modifications to the
recommendation are at the discretion of the school
board. Thank you.
